There was a time when the rate at which people were subjected to hazardous environment were taken for granted and their lives were merely treated as expendable, but when the voice of discontent grew thicker, the issue was taken with grave seriousness and demands grew for a standard with which the relative safety of a working environment could be gauged, thus the OHSAS 18001 Standard was created. Those companies who have utilised the OHSAS 18001 have vastly improved their safety mechanisms, and consequently, almost no records of hazards have been reported.
OHSAS is abbreviated as Occupation Health and Safety Assessment Series for health and safety management systems. The standard was created out of several publications and reports that stipulated the amount and the extent of measures that needed to take so as to provide safety and prevent the risk of hazards from occurring. It provides the framework for building an Occupational Health and Safety Management System by assisting in the creation of policies, procedures and controls needed for the creation of a hazard free working environment.
